Everyone in the Online Film world is talking about DivX Movies, you may have heard of this term till, but what does it indeed mean?
Well, If we would ask a techie:
“DivX is a digital video compression format based on the MPEG-4 technology. DivX files can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time without sacrificing the characteristic of the digital video. Often used on the Internet to exchange video files.”
But for the rest of the world, what does this mean (in english please)? And even more significant, how does this benefit us when we download divx movies?
Fortunately, a Codec was developed by a firm called DivXNetworks. What DivX does is that it takes that old DVD dinosaur of a file and it compresses it into something 7 to 10 times less, and it maintains the tall characteristic of the visuals and the audio on the DivX Movies.
Here’s how it worksòÀæ You have a 2 hour Film that you want to download. You have a regular DVD file which is about 4.7 GB, if you wanted to download it that would take as long as 3 days to download!
What this means for us is that instead of a download assume 3 days or 72 hours, this process is reduced near 3 to 6 hours depending on your conection speed.
If you want to Burn the file onto a Cd and watch it on your DVD, first create certain your DVD-player supports DivX/XviD playback, then all you need to do is Burn it onto a CD or two, depending on the size of the film, and you got yourself a Ready to Rumble film. Just create certain you hold the copies to yourself and not distribute them illegally or sell them and you are all set.
Other thing you will want to hold in mind is keeping popcorn in your home and wiring your tv with as many speakers as humanly possible.
Two American backpackers in Amsterdam, Josh (Derek Richardson) and Paxton (Jay Hernandez), along with their Icelandic friend, Oli are lured into a hostel Slovakia where they are told the woman are eagar to pleasure American men. They are travelling Europe for a recent trip till they graduate from college, so there are no holds barred when it comes to sex, drugs and anything else that comes their way. Once they reach Slovaki, Josh and “Pax” hook up with 2 very accommodating and very fine women, Natalya and Svetlana, and things go a bit weird.
This was definitely a whirlwind 1 hour and 35 minutes. Any longer and things may have gone very, very incorrect and very, very long. I went to see this film with my friend, who was completely grossed out and freaked out…just as the hype said she must be. I am not certain if I was expecting more or have just seen one too much horror films because I thought it was kind of tame.
Jay Hernandez was great as Paxton, as far as performances go…but my goodness, this guy made some pretty stupid decisions. I will not go into them here because you will kill me for spoiling the film. The film was rather predictable, but in an enjoyable way, if you know what I mean. You knew what was coming up and it is kind of what you wanted to happen. Much people got their just desserts and that’s all I will speak!
Final comment: If these guys had put Canadian flag patches on their backpacks, they may not have run into so much problems. It seems that Americans are very valuable in this grotesque game.
You are watching TV one evening scanning through the reruns thinking it is pathetic how few there is to watch anymore when a fantastic film trailer comes on. It is everything you love - the right actors, the wit, the action - and your heart beats a few faster in anticipation - if only you could watch it RIGHT NOW!
Well, the movie industry has heard you. Along with the speed of the internet, consumers have now come to a new stage of demand. It used to be that we WANTED everything immediately - now we Suppose it.
This is not the sort of thing that goes unnoticed by industries that cater to popular reception. And now it has been announced that we may not be far away from simply walking over to our computer and downloading the newest releases.
During a meeting at the Cannes Movie Festival, Culture Ministers from across Europe, movie industry representatives and Internet Service Providers were among those who met to discuss the possible policies needed to distribute movies online.
BBC news reports European Union media commissioner Viviane Reding as stating: “In Europe, as in another continents, the opportunities for people to enjoy films online are set to magnify tremendously over the following little years”.
Naturally there are still much issues to be resolved till movies are readily accessible to the popular online. Piracy and broadband capabilities are still being questioned.
Piracy became the prominent issue when music files were being illegally shared over the internet. While the music industry fought against such services as Napster, they are still far from recovering their market revenue and the movie industry is not anxious to join them.
What cannot be debated is that there IS a market, and no industry likes to bypass that because of possible problems.
Right now European broadband may not be up to the task of downloading such big files but has plans to proceed with distribution soon.
In America there has already been film distribution with the inevitable legal proceedings against individuals facilitating unauthorized downloads.
Although the fight against piracy is being taken very seriously by the industry, it is still parents who are at the forefront of setting the example and instructing children on the ethics of downloading such material. Responsibility is learned.
In any event, the following time you see a great film advertised and you are handy to the internet, probably you must remain in, avoid the lines and the traffic and check it out online!
